Hillcrest donates books to South Africa

MORE than 50 boxes of books will be winging their way to help underprivileged children in South Africa, thanks to the generosity of Hillcrest School.

The Ufosa Foundation, based in Battle, received the donation for the charity’s South Africa Education Programme.

Ufosa collects donated books in the UK, catalogues them and then prepares 1,000 book libraries to put into schools in South Africa, ready for use by the children there.

Sponsor British Airways flies them out to Cape Town for Ufosa, where volunteer staff then collect them and place them in storage, ready for later personal delivery to the various schools.

Jim Cameron, director of community participation at Hillcrest, said: “As the school closes and The Hastings Academy opens in September we have had to look very carefully at what we want to carry over from the old to the new.

“We immediately thought of Ufosa as we know that the books will be put to good use.

“We are very proud to be at the forefront of improving educational opportunities for the young people of East Sussex, and the fact that schools in South Africa can also benefit from our development is an added bonus.”
